NIPPON MARU

The Nippon Maru was built at the Kawasaki shipyard in Kobe in March 1930. She has a steel hull, a four-mast bark type sail structure, and two 600-HP auxiliary diesel engines. Installation of these auxiliary engines is based on the safety-first consideration learned from lessons after accidents at sea encountered by many training ships. The overall design of the ship was done in Japan except for the Western-style design of the outfitting, which was delegated to a British company. She has a taller hull and relatively smaller sail areas to meet the requirements that larger areas are allocated for accommodation sections, the dining room, and the kitchen to accept a large number of trainees on board and that the area of each sail is smaller so that young trainees can handle it.
