Once you receive the kit, the very first thing that we would suggest you to do is to take the assembling instructions sheet in the kit and look for the 'parts list' section (generally present in the last page of the instructions sheet) and compare it with the number of sprues present in the box. once you have a tally, read through the instructions thoroughly and then open the sprue packets as and when necessary. Further, cut the parts using the right tools, paint them as per the instructed or appropriate colours and then assemble them with the help of instructions sheet.
The best way to separate the parts from the sprue (also called as trees) is by using the right tools like hobby knife, cutters or snippers. Care should be taken to cut the parts off as close as possible to the surface of the part so there is no excess plastic on the part from the tree. Never try to twist and remove the parts off the tree because it may result in parts getting cut off crookedly or parts getting cut with excessive plastic, which will require further finishing before you could use them for assembling. Adult supervision is recommended while using tools for kids below 14 years of age.
Most of the hobby kits are injection molded as a result of the process, sprues and parts will sometimes have a rough edge or mold line. These can be removed by sanding the edge off the part with a small file, emery board, or sandpaper. This has to be done prior to painting your parts for a more realistic and professional appearance. Use a light touch as styrene plastic is soft and will easily sand.
Generally, you will have better results by painting your model before assembling it. An exception is to first glue together small parts of an assembly if they will all be the same color and painting it as a unit.
Decals should be dipped in lukewarm water for only a moment and then set on a paper towel to let the water soak in and dissolve the adhesive that holds the decal on the paper. The decal will curl up, and then unroll after a short time. At this point the decals should be able to be moved around on the backing paper and slid into location on the model. Once in place they can be dabbed with the tip of a paper towel or tissue to soak up excessive water.
